American Indian Center Graduate Assistant

Responsibilities

•Demonstrate initiative to identify needs of American Indian students and provide support to enhance student retention and graduation.

•Outreach to American Indian students by offering personal, phone and electronic communication to enhance individualized services and facilitate student involvement and mentorship.

•Coordinate academic, career, financial, personal and cultural enrichment activities for the Lower Sioux Teacher Preparation Program (TPP) student cohort.

•Monitor TPP students by assessing academic progress using university software to inform and document work with students. Update necessary systems.

•Provide information regarding the financial aid process and assist students with scholarships, grant and loan applications.

•Coordinate the purchase of supplies

•Provide assessment of programs and services.

•Other duties assigned by Director.

 

Qualifications and Demonstrated Abilities 

•A bachelor’s degree and enrollment in a SCSU graduate program, with a minimum of 8 masters-level credits or 6 doctoral credits. Must maintain a 3.0 grade point average.

•Ability to work on campus in the American Indian Center for 20 hours per week (minimum of 3 days/week) during the academic year.

•Knowledge and experience with American Indian People, History, Culture and Education.

•A commitment to equity, inclusion, social justice, and growth mindset to enhance intercultural development.

•Strong written and verbal intercultural communication skills. 

•Demonstrated organizational skills to manage numerous tasks independently and collaboratively and project management skills.

•Evidence of professional work habits such as attendance, accountability, thoroughness, resourcefulness, and ability to maintain confidential information. 

•Computer competent with proficient knowledge of Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook) and Social Media Platforms (Facebook, LinkedIn, Instagram, Snapchat).

 

Outcomes

The Graduate Assistant will organize, implement and assess programming to support the retention and graduation of American Indian students.  This will include generating ideas, setting goals, collaboration, implementation, evaluation and reports.

 

The Graduate Assistant will develop knowledge and skills to create learning environments and intercultural relationships enriched with diverse perspectives to connect and adapt cultural similarities and differences of individuals and groups.

 

The Graduate Assistant will develop skills and knowledge to lead culturally relevant projects, enhance student success and strengthen the American Indian campus community with documentation of increased student involvement and evaluation.

 

The Graduate Assistant will develop communication to adapt to cultural differences for effective speaking and writing to impact effective intercultural relationships. 

 

The Graduate Assistant will develop knowledge and skills needed to understand and apply ethical standards in professional environment.
