GRADUATE WRITING SUPPORT - GRADUATE ASSISTANT (GA)

GRADUATE WRITING SUPPORT - GRADUATE ASSISTANT (GA)
POSITION DESCRIPTION FOR: 
F2025-Sp2026

Start/End Date:  June 1, 2025 – May 8, 2026 

Hours: 20/week on campus

Salary: $10,560/academic year, plus tuition remission (up to 9 credits/semester). Additional compensation for Summer. Schedule to be determined.

  • Admitted to a graduate degree program.
  • Effective oral and written communication skills.
  • Ability to work evenings, weekends.
  • Ability to work over summer and breaks.
  • Demonstrated cultural competence. 
  • Ability to work equally as well as part of a team and independently.
  • Demonstrated competence in technical and interpersonal skills.
  • Previous experience in tutoring and academic writing support or teaching experience
  • Detail oriented with a strong customer service orientation.
  • Effective time management.
  • Ability to think critically, resolve problems, and take initiative.
     

Graduate Writing Resource Focus

  • Develop and present workshops to graduate writers, classes, and instructors 
  • Work one-on-one and in small groups with student writers both in person and online
  • Create handouts and instructional tools, PowerPoint presentations, and multi-media material.
  • Maintain the Graduate Writing D2L site.
  • Read and apply research in the teaching and tutoring of writing
  • Provide support for academic outreach of the School of Graduate Studies.
  • Collaborates and participates in the development and delivery of academic programming, as well as research and grant development workshops.
  • Support production and delivery of bi-monthly departmental newsletters (SGS and RSP), including content development and delivery through Constant Contact.
  • Serve as a back-up for the Format Review and ETD Support GA
  • Contribute to SGS Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn and YouTube accounts, ensuring interactivity and freshness of content.
  • Actively use Huskies Connect to publicize academic workshops.
  • Engage in assisting other SGS staff and GA’s as necessary and directed by supervisor.
  • Support retention and completion initiatives of the School of Graduate Studies.
  • Support student success programming and outreach initiatives.
  • Participate in recruitment activities as needed.

 

GA Learning Outcomes

  • Apply and improve their own expertise in the disciplines of rhetoric and writing
  • Apply practical and theoretical frameworks in support of ELL, ESL, older, learning challenged, and other underrepresented groups
  • Develop advising and tutoring skills.
  • Use effective written and oral communication to develop and present writing support materials.
