Graduate Assistant in Orientation and Registration

Job description

Advising & Student Transitions seeks an Orientation Specialist Graduate Assistant (20 hours/week) for the academic year.

Graduate Assistants in Advising & Student Transitions (A&ST) will work together as a team to support new and continuing students in achieving their academic, personal and career goals through participation in advising, orientation, and transition programming. 

This position will contribute to the following projects: 

  • Assist in the planning and implementing orientation programming, including Huskies Advising & Registration, Huskies 1st Four Days, and self-paced online orientation programs.
  • Support recruiting and hiring new Student Advisors, Orientation Leaders, and Orientation Student Coordinators.
  • Support the efforts of university Student Success team
  • Manage departmental social media accounts.
  • Coordinate drop-in advising
  • Coordinate events and outreach efforts related to orientation, advising, and retention.
  • Lead team of undergraduate students during events, under general supervision of Orientation Coordinator

Learning Outcomes 

  • GAs will assist a diverse student population in navigating the various university systems through course scheduling and understanding the requirements for a baccalaureate degree.
  • GAs will deliver accurate information regarding registration procedures and university policies resulting in timely graduation.
  • GAs will gain experience applying best practices to advising, orientation, student transition, and retention planning.
  • GAs will gain a working knowledge of basic resources that are commonly used in the field of academic advising.
  • GAs will support students’ sense of belonging within our community through programming and resources.

Qualifications: 

  • Regular admission to a St. Cloud State graduate program
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills
  • Ability to work with students from diverse backgrounds, including international students, adult learners, first-generation students, students of color, and other historically underserved populations
  • Ability to work as part of a team with professional staff and other graduate students
  • Ability to be a self-starter, take initiative, and work independently
  • Strong attention to detail and organizational skills
  • Registered for a minimum of 8 graduate credits for Fall

Preferred Qualifications: 

  • Preference given to students admitted to SCSU’s College Counseling and Student Development (CCSD), Higher Education Administration, or other programs that would support student development and/or event programming (counseling, mass communications, etc.)

Skills:

Salary: Stipend and Tuition Remission
